What may seem counter-intuitive in the midst of a public health crisis is happening at many hospitals in the region: An unprecedented shift away from non-urgent procedures has caused dramatic changes in staffing.
In some cases, certain kinds of medical professionals have faced reduced hours. Ralph Northam, like many other governors, signed an executive order last week directing medical facilities to postpone elective surgeries — a mandate that followed days of asking health care facilities to voluntarily cancel appointments.
The requirement frees up resources anticipated for coronavirus patients. More bed space, ventilators and personal protective equipment like gloves and masks are now on deck for front line staff dealing with COVID, the disease caused by the virus. As of Tuesday, there were 1, people statewide diagnosed with the rapidly spreading disease. Twenty-seven Virginians had died. The furloughs, expected to last 30 to 90 days, will affect Bon Secours employees who cannot be redeployed to other duties and are unable to work because of temporary closures, cancellations and decreased patient volumes in primary care, outpatient and surgical areas.
Hospital officials said furloughed employees will get paid through Friday, then can use up their paid time off. They also will be eligible for unemployment benefits. When other hospital systems in the region were asked, none provided estimates to The Virginian-Pilot on Tuesday. But the situation has caused some singular irony. At a press conference last week, Northam said his administration was looking at relaxing some licensing requirements and using medical students to beef up manpower as community spread of the virus causes the number of cases to multiply.

Low census is impacting some staff who work at Sentara Healthcare. One employee, who asked not to be identified out of concern for her job, said she works for a resource pool that places staff in the hospitals.
Under normal circumstances, she works about 30 hours per week. Kelly Kennedy, a Sentara spokeswoman, said the company is trying to make sure employees are offered other duties that will keep them working and prevent them from using up their paid time off. Most health systems have established funds, some of which are supported by coworker donations, to help employees who are impacted by the coronavirus.
