There's a lot to talk about with Civilization 6and the vast majority of it is good talk. After playing over 20 hours of a preview build this past week, I can't see myself wanting to go back to Civ 5 anytime soon.
But out of all of the huge changes in Civ 6the thing I found myself most excited about at the end of the day was its music. Simply put, it's incredible. It caught my attention right away with the main menu theme. While it's no Baba Yetu from Civ 4it was good enough that I decided to go digging in the the preview build's source folders to find the raw audio file—which was surprisingly easy to do, as it looks like Firaxis is continuing its shining track record of being good to its modders.
But when I finally found the file, I was surprised to see it labeled "American Industrial Theme" instead of "Main Menu" or something like that. This made me realize something I hadn't explicitly noticed while playing: every civ has its own unique theme, and that theme has four different variations depending on the era the civ is currently in.Determination - Undertale Parody (Parody of Irresistible - Fall Out Boy) ft. Lollia
As you advance, each civ's music starts gathering more instruments and more layers, but keeps a core melody you can recognize the entire time. And this is for all 20 civs, which means Firaxis produced at least different 80 songs just for theme music.
So I dove back into the source files and went hunting for my favorites. In the video above, I take a deep dive look at the American theme music through all four of its variations, as well as some from France, Norway, and England.
These are the raw audio files I'm using converted to a playable format so there's no background or ambient noise from the game to muck them up. Additionally, we've uploaded the audio from the video directly to SoundCloud in case YouTube compresses the songs in any sort of unwanted way.

Without a score and soundtrack, a film creates a louder silence. The sonic architecture of these two records is night and day—one aims to rupture eardrums while the other is a subdued caress. With Tyler, specifically, all five of his full-length studio albums are sequenced as if they are movie scores yet to materialize.
Through self-production, the Los Angeles-born multi-hyphenate has, with every album, improved his gift for gathering all the necessary pieces to construct a world for the listener to live in. IGOR overflows with instrumentation sequenced with unconventional but controlled, unpredictability. IGOR has a sophisticated backbone. The overlapping from chord to chord, sound to sound, voice to voice, sounds like a Pro Tools session for each song thrown into a juicer and blended into a heartbreak smoothie.
But Tyler meant for us to experience the work as a whole. Although Akira Symphonic Suite is not about heartbreak, the two albums share an elastic spontaneity that keeps the music in motion. It aspired to greater heights, to immerse the listener in the world of Neo-Tokyo and stir the emotions without once dropping you out of the film.
What exceeds even the cinematic standard of most scores is how, sonically, Geinoh Yamashirogumi was able to create a portal to a Tokyo that does not exist, yet, musically, and how it can sound exactly how the film looks: a combination of ancient destruction with dystopian futurism. This feat is rather impressive when you consider Shoji Yamashiro did not read the script or view any scenes from the movie before composing the music.
How the first 30 seconds build-up to the spasmodic synthesizer is like the summoning of someone or something unstoppable. How the chords progress with taunting ease, and how the choir adds a simple, yet effective hum. Most vocal tracks that appear on the album are meditative, poetic, but never prominent enough to lead the record.
The songs of Akira Symphonic Suite progress unrealistically in sequence, structure, and style. Awards are bestowed upon those who play by certain rules; there are no rules in Neo-Tokyo. It feels like I cut clean through something.
Her singing will cut through your soul despite the language barrier. The lack of a vocalist leaves room for your mind to wander. Frank Ocean's 'Blonde' is an album that isn't just heard but felt.
One year later, I'm still in my feelings.
The void year may become a void period, with several years of stillness yet to come. Best Of.
