Tortles are a race of anthropomorphic turtles who live simple lives as peaceful farmers on the Savage Coast of Mystaraa region expanded as the mini-setting of Red Steel. Though inoffensive by nature, they will fight to defend their homes and they are naturally very good at tanking. Like their fellow Red-Steel introducees the Araneathey have never managed to get any official update until 5e, in comparison to Rakasta who became Catfolk in Races of the Wild and Lupins who got a Dragon Magazine article about them in issue Their possible connection to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles remains a mystery.
For classes, they are restricted to FighterWizard MageAbjurerConjurerDiviner or Water Elementalist onlyClericThiefBard or Psionicistbeing capable of attaining level 11, 9, 12, 9, 9 and 8 respectively, if you follow that stupid rule of race capping level limits. Of course, they're going to rely on this; their odd body shape makes it hard to get armor made for them and it really only provides a benefit if it's naturally superior to their shell's AC.
They have infravision to a range of 60 feet, automatically proficient in swimming, and can hold their breath for 10 rounds automatically. Weirdly, tortles die within a year of mating, so only those tortles who abstain from mating live to particularly great ages and children are mostly reared by their aunts and uncles, related or adoptive. Exactly why this is so, nobody frigging knows.
So, yeah, equally stupid. For reasons that are probably obvious, tortles went fairly underdeveloped once Red Steel faded away.

The dorsal portion of their shells was usually darker than their skins, while the ventral portion was lighter, usually with yellowish tones.
Tortles rarely wore any clothing, favoring instead belts and harnesses to carry their belongings. They had little tolerance for cold, and usually migrated away from temperate areas when winter approached.
Although generally poor swimmers, tortles were capable of floating on water and could hold their breath for over an hour. Their high buoyancy granted them the ability to cross swamps, mud, and quicksand with little difficulty.
Most tortles had the notion of having their houses on their backs, which meant that they rarely felt homesick or the need to lay roots in any single place.
They were eager to learn new customs and found beauty in the most ordinary things. Despite spending much of their lives isolated, tortles liked to form strong friendships. Besides being able to wield weapons and shields, tortles had claws and beaks that were effective as natural weapons.
In addition, they could retreat into their shells for additional protection if necessary. When withdrawn in this way, they were unable to move and see, but could still hear and smell the outside world. The shape of their bodies made it impossible for tortles to wear armor, however. Tortles only reproduced near the end of their natural lifespans. When their young hatched from their eggs, they spent the remainder of their lives sharing all their life experiences and teaching survival skills.
Young tortles would become orphans after about one year, by which time they were expected to be able to fend for themselves. Usually keeping to themselves, they tended to live alone, but kept in closed contact with their community. Tortle villages were typically welcoming of humanshalflingsand elves.
Tortles were common in southern Chultnear a peninsula that bordered Samarach. An event brought by the Spellplague separated the peninsula from the continent by a narrow strait. The newly formed island became known as the Snout of Omgar and provided a natural defense from predators from the mainland. The island was claimed by the tortles living nearby as their domain. During the late s DRa few tortles offered their services as jungle guides in different places of Chult. Sign In Don't have an account?

I messed up the left hand in the print and I scaled him down a bit so it fits roughly the size of a tortle in 5e. The original modal is more of a large creature than a medium creature. I can't wait to paint this guy!! Thanks for your work! One of his feet didn't print properly since I had my bed leveled improperly, but it works out since dex was my dump stat anyway.
This is the first mini I've ever painted and was a very fun model to start on. Remember Me. Forgot Password? Login with Google Login with Facebook. Social Networks Link Embed.
