I'm just getting started with kicking the tires on the app, and I haven't even gotten the Linux appliance downloaded and configured quite yet. I hope to add my observations to this article, as time permits. You too can get started right way with the mobile app!

I noticed it doesn't require you to have the full UNMS already installed. I was able to use it straight away for some basic management by merely pointing it to my EdgeRouter Lite, seen pictured below.

This sort of direct connect didn't work on earlier app versions. Testing the download and install and configuration of the Ubuntu appliance is continuing to go well. TinkerTry - Sensible Information Technology at home.

Now to actually install unifi controller. There are two unifi official guides on this. One is to use apt repository which won't work because Unifi doesn't support armhf, and the other is to install the package yourself.

We need to do the latter to make it work. UNMS won't work without us setting up docker. However, their wiki page doesn't work for Debian buster, only stretch. Docker recommends to use convenience scripts to install itself on Raspbian, including Raspbian buster. Don't forget to add the docker group to the pi user by running sudo usermod -aG docker pi. Re-ssh in to get the usergroup updated and finally test docker to ensure it's working with docker run hello-world.

All our documents and apps are web-based. We may need a site-to-site VPN in the future, looking at IP camera systems at each station and it would be nice to have them linked. It would be nice to be able to manage the networks remotely but TBH it's all dumb now and working OK. Plus, they are cheaper.

You can drop the cloud key off your list if you're willing to roll your own management server to adopt the devices to. WIth the USG you'll get quite a bit of network information in the controller that's otherwise missing. It's neat, but isn't much of a gamechanger except when I do remote deployments where I will never be hands on with the devices.

IMO, the edgerouter has far better features and configuration options, I'd go with that and the edgeswitch most likely. I like both versions well enough. I'd still recommend saving the money and going with the edge- labelled devices, you can always use SNMP to monitor network health, though that may add another management interface for you to monitor. All of their devices are controlled via the cloud.

You are able to manage all of the AP, switches etc from anywhere.

They are super easy to setup and deploy. If you have someone that can plug them in you can even deploy them remotely.

Building out the VPN is probably the easiest I've seen. They also have AP's that can be installed out doors.

Using IPsec over any wide area network, MX Security Appliances seamlessly link your branches to headquarters and to one another. Site-to-site connectivity is established through a single click in the Cisco Meraki dashboard. Gone are the configuration headaches of traditional site-to-site VPNs: route discovery, authentication, and security policies are all handled automatically from the cloud.

Full- and split-tunnel VPNs are configured with a single drop-down, and new sites are added with a few simple clicks. I use Unifi and I'd go with Dane advice. As for Cisco, no.

Installing UNMS - Ubiquiti Network Management System

It is not worth it. It over priced and has zero advantages over Ubiquiti equipment plus getting into the Ubiquiti environment is far far easier to learn if you are not a Cisco person.

Limey, what is your reasoning for going with the mesh equipment? Does your site have need for mesh over a normal WAP setup? Spinning up the controller on a digital ocean Linux vm is fast, very easy, and will allow you to control both sites in one system. It will definitely make configuration and management easier for you. Let us know if you have any other questions! It's a question of ease of use VS features. UniFi is free to download so maybe get that and have a play. Or if you can't manage the Edgerouter's firewall a USG could help you out too.

Edgeswitch would let you easily create a VLAN to keep them seperate from the rest of the network. Depending on bandwidth you might only need one NVR and stream recordings over the VPN but having two is probably not a bad idea if only for redundancy. We proudly present the latest version of our product. The UNMS team prepared the biggest update so far for you with hundreds of smaller upgrades, so for the sake of your time, we will list just a dozen of the most interesting ones here.

If you are not sure what UNMS is and you want to get acquainted please see this link. Maybe you already know UNMS and you would like to try it out? You can either try the demo or simply install it right away. Do you have questions? From there you can also send us your feature requests. This is the most important feature of the 0. This complex new feature took several months of development as it demanded complex changes in the actual structure of the UNMS code.

Although this is already a great feature, please note that it is just a first step and we will continue to improve the topology map in the future. One of the future upgrades will be a full automatization of the topology map creation.

Right now UNMS can create datalinks between wireless and fiber devices, but Ethernet connections need to be added manually. Our goal is to make this process completely automatic. There will be two levels of the network topology map. The Overall view will show only sites, and the Detailed view will focus on a single site or client and show all network elements connected to it.

This is a preview of the Overall view:. In order to display a complete topology map of your network, including third-party devices, we created basic support for third-party devices.

Tutorial: Azure Active Directory integration with UNIFI

Those represent elements in the network that UNMS knows very little about and will basically only include their IP, hostname, and interfaces. This is still very useful information in order to monitor non-Ubiquiti devices you may have in your architecture. The ability to precisely measure data throughput for individual clients is a critical step on the road to integration with UCRM.

NetFlow is a brand new module which will not only measure data throughput but also recognize unknown IP addresses in a network and use that information to create a third-party device. Performance is a priority for us, just second after security. There are some significant improvements under the hood, including support for multiple Node. We also moved most of the unstructured device data into the PostgreSQL database to allow faster processing and network status analysis in the future.

In our ongoing effort to broaden the scale of devices manageable by UNMS, we are introducing monitoring support for airFiber models. For example, firmware version 4. Device discovery is one of the most user-friendly ways of adding devices to UNMS. Initially, there were some limitations to this tool, so we decided to get rid of them. This will significantly improve the customer experience for many users, especially if they need to add many devices at once. The goal of these new dashboards is to conveniently show all the data you need including the new NetFlow, Alerts, Device Links, Photo Gallery, and more.

This frequently requested feature allows exclusion of devices from the overall network health measurement. This is particularly helpful when the network administrator wants to keep devices with known issues connected to UNMS for administrative or other strategic reasons. With this feature, you can easily mark any device to exclude it from the overall network health measurement and prevent it from generating outage alerts.

The very first thing that catches your eye after you first run the 0. If you have a great picture of Ubiquiti hardware which you would like to share with other UNMS users, please feel free to send it to unms. We will select the best submissions and add them to the login screen gallery for the next release.
